Roberta, a client of atWork Australia’s Spearwood office, pictured with Senator Penny Wong and Marketer Natalie Francke, was faced with many challenges to gain success and credibility as an apprentice mechanic.

Roberta is a softly spoken, shy 18 year old Indigenous woman, who is determined to put everything into the opportunity of becoming a mechanic with Melville Toyota. This opportunity was made possible by the efforts of Natalie Francke, atWork’s Marketer in Spearwood.

After 7 months, she is heading towards the completion of her apprenticeship, which will give her Certificate III in Automotive Mechanical Technology and the title of Automotive Service Technician.

With the support of atWork Australia and her Case Manager, Robyn Paparone, additional assistance has been given in helping her to pay for driving lessons. Great steps forward have been made by Roberta, who has also saved hard from her first few salary cheques, to purchase contact lenses which she needed in order to drive. Roberta has now completed the first few lessons and is well on the way to gaining her licence which will be invaluable for the career she has chosen.

As a result of her amazing achievements Roberta was nominated for the NESA Employee of the Year Award and can be seen holding her award as one of the 3 finalists. A fantastic achivement for Roberta supported by an excellent team from atWork Spearwood.
